Danger in Plain Sight: A Callie James Thriller
Burt Weissbourd. Blue City, $14.99 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-1-7334-382-0-9
Weissbourd (Minos) channels Hitchcock in this high-octane thriller. Less than a year into Callie James’s marriage to French investigative reporter Daniel Odile-Grand, she caught him with another woman and divorced him. Now, 14 years later, Callie, who has since become a successful Seattle restaurateur, learns that her bartender, Cash, has been using the restaurant to smuggle ivory. Fearful his crimes will threaten her livelihood, she fires Cash and calls the police. But she’s forced to ask Cash, the only man she knows who has been around violence, for help after Daniel shows up out of the blue claiming that he’s in danger because of an investigation of his into international money laundering, arms trafficking, and terrorism. Callie gives Daniel some money out of pity and dismisses him, only to change her attitude when he’s almost run over in front of her eyes. He survives, and Callie enlists Cash to protect the journalist. Weissbourd knows how to keep readers turning pages. The prospect of a sequel will appeal to fans of strong, plausible female leads.
