The fun first All These Gifts sci-fi romance from Kilaen (If You Want Me Close) takes readers to a queer-norm near-future world teeming with superpowers. Deneve Wilder was a waitress before a crashed alien ship infected her body with nanites that grant her visions of future danger only she can prevent. Staying on the run would keep her safe from the government agency tasked with rounding up people affected by the crash, but Deneve’s nanites have other plans for her. When she meets gorgeous but standoffish stationery store owner Jolie Betancour, Deneve recognizes Jolie from her visions of a stranger being abducted—and her nanites won’t let her leave until she’s stopped the crime. Jolie’s own dangerous nanite powers have her living in solitude for the safety of others. But after Deneve saves Jolie from being taken, the threat of the abductor’s return has them reluctantly sticking together. Kilaen’s confident handling of the ensuing slow-burning beginning to their intense sapphic romance plays nicely with the tantalizing hints at a deeper, thrilling sci-fi plot that would fit right into an X-Men series. Readers will need to tune in for future installments to see a resolution, but this will leave them wanting more. (Self-published)
