Inside Cut: A C.T. Ferguson Crime Novel
Tom Fowler. Widening Gyre Media, $14.99 trade paper (278p) ISBN 978-1-953603-23-4
In Fowler’s suspenseful seventh mystery featuring Baltimore PI C.T. Ferguson (after 2019’s A March from Innocence), Ferguson, who’s built a successful business despite such obstacles as having been arrested for hacking into a bank, takes on a client, Denise Murray, who’s worried about her son, Calvin, a college basketball star. Calvin’s skills have made him a potential high draft selection, positioning him for a big payday. But Denise fears he’s in trouble based on fragments of phone conversations she’s overheard, in which Calvin repeatedly states that he didn’t want to do something before eventually giving in. She links those calls to an unexpected windfall—her expensive cancer drug has suddenly been paid for, she suspects, by Calvin. Ferguson theorizes that the athlete was asked to shave points, and begins trying to prove that speculation and get him out of his fix. Fowler’s characters and prose style are reminiscent of Robert B. Parker. Spenser fans new to this series will likely want to catch up with it. (Self-published)
