BookLife's AI Policy for BookLife Reviews and BookLife Prize

BookLife requires any individual submitting a title for review to disclose whether and how artificial intelligence was used in the creation of the work. The use of AI does not automatically disqualify a work from review consideration. We distinguish between AI-generated and AI-assisted.

AI-generated includes material created by an AI tool, whether text or images. If any content in a work originated with artificial intelligence, it is considered AI-generated. An exception to this includes material created by AI that is central to a book’s premise, provided it is clear to the reader what was created by AI.

AI-assisted material includes text or images that were created by a human being, and then refined or otherwise modified by AI tools. Creators may use AI, for instance, for research, fact-checking, copyediting, proofreading, data analysis, or image editing. 

Works considered AI-generated are not eligible for review. Works considered AI-assisted are eligible for review.

Publishers Weekly has a different policy regarding AI. A book not eligible for a BookLife Review is still eligible for a Publishers Weekly review. Please reveiw PW's AI policy for details.

FAQs

My nonfiction book is about AI, and some of the text or illustrations were created by AI as part of the book’s discussion of the topic. Can I submit my book?

Yes, provided the sections created by AI are clearly marked as such.

AI is an important part of the plot of my fictional work, and I integrated AI-generated text as a narrative device. Can I submit my book?

Yes, provided it is clear in the context of the narrative what is created by you, and what was created by an AI.

All of the text and images contained in my book were created by humans. The book’s cover was created by an AI tool. Can I submit my book?

Yes, you can submit your book. 

I used AI to create a graph or chart based on a dataset. Can I submit my book?

Yes, provided the graphic is credited and names the AI tool used to create it.

I wrote the entirety of the first draft of my book, and then used AI to assist in editing and/or proofreading it. Can I submit my book?

Yes.
