My name is JulieAnn and I am an award-winning poet and novelist. I also pen short stories and am the author of a stage play. Aside from being a poet and novelist, I conduct writing workshops, and am available for guest lectures in academic setting, and public speaking engagements. Along with those things, I occassionally take on free-lance poetry critique in between my constant creative pursuits. I do live poetry performances and have performed on stages everywhere from Utah to NYC.
If you have a poem or collection of poetry and you need feedback for content and flow, I will provide you with extensive feedback on what is working, and what needs improvement. I only work with professionals. If you're not ready to see red ink, then it's best to run your work by your best friend or your cat. If you want an edit that's comprehensive, honest, thorough, and dense with constructive criticism, then I can help you. I will never tell you something's not working unless I can tell you exactly why.
I prefer working on poetry that is free-form, rather than "form" meaning a specific style such as Villanelles or Sestinas. I generally prefer non-academic poetry. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not my preference to read, write or edit. I am espcially honed into the use of tropes or clichés. I will help you weave words into something coherent and meaningful. If you like to use lofty words and mixed, confusing metaphors because it sounds complicated and artsy, I'll call you on it. I firmly believe the role of poetry is to create a common connection with universal cohesion. Poetry should be accessible, not written for people who must have an MFA to understand it.
I am never cruel for cruelty's sake. As an author and poet myself, I understand the balls it takes to let someone put your work under the microscope. I will give you as many 'atta boys' as you earn. My job, as I see it, is to help you create the best version of your work you possibly can. Again, I am not unkind. I do, however, shoot straight and say it like it is. I am not a line editor, but will catch anything glaring and correct accordingly. A professional writer knows you need both types of editors to have a successful product.
Are you scared yet? You should be. Now man or woman up and send me your best shit. Let's work together to create a "sob in the spine" with your poetry.
Fees are negotiable based on my mood. Deal with it.
(And also, what's with the watermark on my logo? I bought that $%#*! photo fair and square. Grr. )
