I grew up in rural Nebraska—in a town so small that it was considered a village. Although it only encompassed one square mile, in my imagination, the space was infinite. On any given day the town transformed into the setting for a spy club, a scavenger hunt, a hotel, or a trip back to the pioneer days. I spent summer nights with a huge group of “town” friends, playing four-hour -long games of Capture the Flag or Hide and Go Seek. Sometimes I would go on hikes, disappearing into the massive cornfields behind my house. Eventually, I grew up and moved away. I had a baby, got married, had another baby, and yet another. In comparison to others, my life has been very fortunate. Very, very fortunate.
