Adriaan Verheul taught international relations at the Royal Dutch Naval Academy and served in the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, both at Headquarters and in the field, covering missions in the Middle-East and Africa. He worked at the World Bank on Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programs in Central Africa and served as the UN’s head of DDR programs in Sudan (2007-2009) and Eastern Congo (2014-15). He also worked as an independent foreign affairs consultant in the area of post-conflict stabilization with assignments in the Central African Republic, Haiti, Kosovo, Liberia, Nepal, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Sudan and the US. He has a BA in law and an MA in international relations from Leyden University, the Netherlands. He is married with two adult children and lives in Northern Virginia.
