Bronx-born Allen Shadow (aka Allen Kovler) has been a cook, a cabdriver, a correspondent and a composer. His gritty-yet-lyrical prose style has been forged by the streets of New York. His debut thriller, “Hell City,” is available on Amazon. Kirkus Reviews called it “A striking read that will leave you looking around the corner in fear.” A sequel, the novel “Puppet Girl,” is forthcoming. His TV Pilot for a series based on the novels was a finalist in the in the 2015 World Series of Screenwriting.
His poetry has been published widely in the small press, including two chapbooks: “Harlem River Baby” (Quick Books, Pueblo, Colorado, 1985) and “America, I’ll Have My Way With You” (Casa del Pueblo Press, Pueblo, Colorado, 2015). His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, including a piece that was part of a series selected as a Best of The New York Times 2015.
Shadow earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Lehman College, studying with Pulitzer Prize-winning Poet James Wright and novelist Jerome Charyn. His writing/performing credits include: poet, songwriter, rock artist and novelist. He also works in public relations.
