Amy Phillips, author of Harry the Hairless Cat and Harry's Clean Up Day, is a new author whose love for children's books stems from a love for children, both her own and the ones she teaches. Her other love is cats. But she will be the first to say that she was a little judgemental about Sphynx cats, who do not have hair like most other breeds. It wasn’t until she found out that two of her friends owned hairless cats that she realized they were just as loveable! Early on in her career as an elementary school teacher, she drew her inspiration from a variety of authors and from the look of awe, inspiration and happiness on her student's faces as she read aloud a picture book to her Kindergarten, first or second grade students. Amy has always appreciated the cleverness and witty approach many authors take when writing to young readers and the illustrations are always the icing on the cake that bring the words to life. Knowing the importance of teaching lessons through the use of literature inspired her even more as she raised her boys to harness a love of reading as well. Amy has expanded her love of education to the high school realm where she sees the importance of instilling character and values early on, hence her need to share her stories with the younger student population. She cannot think of a better way to communicate these important topics than through reading. Amy hopes to always be able to write both meaningful and impactful stories through her love of rhyme that center around topics we are very familiar with today - kindness, inclusion, bias and earth friendliness.
