April Lee Fields, from a very early age, has had an insatiable passion to write. However, it wasn't until her late twenties that April endeavoured to finally bring the quietude of the written word to life by submerging herself in the sacred art of storytelling through spoken word.
Travel is undoubtedly a large part of April’s life and an assortment of her poetic stories cover those personal pilgrimages, openly discussing the lessons that she has learned from such travels. In April’s writing, she uses her own real-life circumstances as an example in which people are able to measure themselves up against.
Alongside of performing at many of Australia’s leading festivals, (such as Rainbow Serpent, Earth Frequency and Newkind) offering motivational talks in University's across New Zealand, and hosting regular poetry and open mic night events in America, April has also performed in and won a number of Spoken Word competitions across the world.
In 2016, April spent the better part of a year writing her first book, ‘A Version of You.’ As the title of her book suggests, these pages are part of a spell-binding story that most everyone can relate to and aspire to find a version of themselves within. ‘A Version of You,’ is a 550 page poetic travel memoir that narrates one year of her life upon the road. Within these pages, a myriad of topics are shamelessly versed and delicately tackled; such as personal development, discovering one’s own divinity, the kaleidoscopic depths of love and loss, as well as the remembrance of magic in a world where such things are often forgotten. Having written, edited, formatted and self-published the entire body of work completely independently, 'A Version of You' is April's life's work.
During her performances with 'A Version of You,' April has also been known to merge melody and sacred story. With the accompaniment of a gentle guitar and a singing voice has been compared to that of a young Nina Simone, April will often sing an assortment of soulful songs at the end of each chapter recital. April has also participated in numerous musical projects over the years where in which she has written and recorded original songs as well as performed in an improv funk band that showcases her quick witted way with words.
Alongside of the unique literary detail that pounces from her pages, the surreal visualisations that pour out of her cheeky British mouth, and the soulful song that will reverberate you to the very core, the unique performance of April Lee Fields is unlike anything that has ever been done before.
