Barbara Weisberg is the author of four children’s books, many articles on science and history for young readers, and one trade biography for an adult audience. She also co-created the TV series Charles in Charge.
Weisberg’s biography of the two teenagers who founded 19th century American Spiritualism, Talking to the Dead: Kate and Maggie Fox and the Rise of Spiritualism (HarperCollins), was named one of the best books of 2004 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was recommended the next year in the Paperback Row column of The New York Times Book Review, and remains in print a decade after publication. Weisberg’s four children’s books are: Susan B. Anthony (Chelsea House, 1990), a YA biography which the Susan B. Anthony Museum in Rochester, New York, brought back into print as a special edition in 2013, stating, “We treasure your book…and it is a favorite among our visitors”; Coronado’s Golden Quest (Steck-Vaughn, 1993), about the explorer’s journeys; Knights and Castles (Western, 1994), and her most recent work, the picture book Space Creatures (2015). Her poetry has appeared in a number of literary journals, including the New York Quarterly, Brooklyn Review, and California State Poetry Quarterly. As a freelance writer, editor, and consultant, Weisberg has developed material for print and digital textbook programs in reading, writing, ESL, literature, and social studies for students from kindergarten through college.
Weisberg earned her M.F.A in Creative Writing at Brooklyn College in 1992, where she was awarded the MacArthur Scholarship in Poetry on the nomination of Allen Ginsberg. Weisberg also has an M.Phil. in American Studies from Yale University and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in American Civilization, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. In 1999, the American Antiquarian Society awarded her the Lila Wallace/Readers Digest Grant for Creative Writers and Artists. She is a member of the Writers Guild of America, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Authors Guild.
