Brendan Kelly is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He received his doctorate in mathematics (Ph.D. number theory) from that university and his doctorate in education (Ed.D.) from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, specializing in computer applications. As one of the few scholars with doctorates in both the natural sciences and the humanities, he has a unique perspective on both the measure and the manifestations of high intelligence.
Before his appointment to the University of Toronto, Professor Kelly had served as Supervisor of Pure and Applied Sciences for the Halton Board of Education serv- ing 50,000 students in Ontario, Canada. He has written more than 60 books and re- sources for publishers and institutions spanning a broad domain, including Pearson Education, Houghton Mifflin, Texas Instruments, the Toronto Stock Exchange, and the Ministry of Education of Ontario. In 1989, he founded Brendan Kelly Publish- ing Inc. that offers 30 titles, including books that help teachers use technology to teach mathematics. These resources are sold widely throughout the United States and Canada and have been translated into Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Professor Kelly’s publications also include numerous articles in scholarly mathematics jour- nals, including a 58-page chapter on technology in the compendium, 20th Century History of Mathematics Education published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Professor Kelly has spoken at more than 100 professional associations throughout the world and has been the keynote speaker at many mathematics and mathematics education conferences across Canada and the United States. He also served for three years on the NCTM Research Advisory Committee.
From September 2014 through January 2019, Professor Kelly has been researching and writing his latest book titled, Intelligence: Where we Were, Where we Are, and Where we’re Going. This publication explores many of the problems of contemporary society that are emerging from the competing components of human intelligence. Tracing the evolution of human cognition as it evolved from a heavy reliance on in- stinct, to an increased emphasis on abstraction, and ultimately metamorphosed into “artificial intelligence,” he sheds light on the factors underlying the growing tensions within and between nations. In a six-decade journey from callow nerd to old white guy status, three fellow-nerds and the author, who began as college classmates, take the reader on a nostalgic tour from the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 to the present conflict in the United States as the 2020 election year approaches. Their dialogs help clarify the more complex ideas presented, while adding a human interest dimension to this much-needed biography of human and artificial intelligence.
