Author Bio
Carol Lee Clippard was born in 1944 in Springfield, MO, where her mother taught second grade while her father was an Army engineer in France and Germany during World War II. Her mother brought her baby daughter home to the farm, where money was scarce but love was abundant.
Carol’s earliest memories are of the death of her mother—a cancer victim when the “c” word was rarely spoken because it was a virtual death sentence. The book Coming Home is Carol’s (Carly’s) autobiographical coming-of-age story that also documents the demise of the family farm and a way of life. The young men coming home from the War did not want to return to farm life, and mechanization squeezed out the small farms while enriching the large-scale operations.
Carol majored in English, earning a bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, and a master’s degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She taught eighth-grade Common Learnings at Maple Park Junior High in Claycomo for a year and then high school English in Alamogordo, NM, while her husband worked on the White Sands Missile Range during the Viet Nam War. When they returned to Kansas City, Carol taught English at Center High School. She stayed home when her sons were young and returned to classroom to teach literature and composition courses for the Metropolitan Community College system at the Blue Springs and Longview campuses.
Carol left teaching in 1995 to become a technical writer for Cerner Corporation, where she worked until retirement. She lives with her husband, Andy Clippard, in Gladstone, Missouri. They enjoy time with their sons’ families and their four grandchildren, especially playing games and taking family vacations.
