CHANDRA WASHINGTON
PERFORMING ARTIST, WRITER
Chandra Washington is a writer, vocalist, performance poet, actress, percussionist, and dancer. She has performed with numerous professional companies on the east coast as well as in Austin, Texas, including Improvisations Unlimited, KanKouran West African Dance Company, Memory of African Culture, Sweet Honey in the Rock’s vocal workshop “In Process...,” Sun Ra Arkestra, Hamiet Bluiett, and CreOp Muse’s “Circle of Light” holiday production. As an actress, she was selected in 2006 to play a supporting role in Paramount Pictures feature film Stop Loss (directed by Kimberly Peirce) and in 2011, Chandra received critical acclaim for her role as “Lady in Blue” in Ntozake Shange’s “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf” (UpRise! Productions, Austin, TX). As writer and performance poet, Chandra won the 2005 Big Texas Poetry Event competition, her poem “I Am Perfect” was selected for the Austin International Poetry Festival Anthology publication in 2009, her multi-disciplined performance project Healing Caravan opened for The Last Poets as part of the 2011 Black Arts Movement Festival, and in 2012 she won the Fringe Festival “Smack Down” Slam Competition in Orlando Florida. Recent endeavors include publishing a short story for youth on self-esteem and anti-bullying titled No Mistake: Journey to Self-Acceptance, singing background vocals for Jeffrey Brian and Kiko Villamizar, and touring Europe with the Sun Ra Arkestra (dance, vocals) as part of the Centennial Dream Tour (July, 2014). As a vocalist, Chandra has a passion for vocal improvisation and harmonizing.
