I am a self-taught artist who skirted around the edges of the art world since high school. While I have taken a number of art courses during my career such as welding and portrait sculpture at the Art League in Alexandria, VA, and glass fusing and glass blowing at Glen Echo Art Park in MD, the majority of my art training has been from books, YouTube, and trial-and-error.
While an engineering student at the University of Michigan in the early 60's I took every art elective I could squeeze into my schedule. I loved becoming an engineer and the understanding of the physical world that gave me, but my heart always beat faster when I was taking an art class or just hanging around the Art School.
During the entire span of my technical career, which centered around teaching computer programming and information-related topics, I would regularly gravitate towards making some kind of art. During the early1990’s I bridged my art and technical interests by designing and implementing a vector art generation application which I named ArtZee. Initially the program was used to generate simple Vasarely-style designs, but as the program grew in features the generated designs became quite sophisticated and interesting. By the time this project had run its course, I had generated well over 1000 unique designs, a handful of which are still in existence.
About 25 years ago I began making ephemeral "Yard Art" - colorful outdoor constructions that weren’t meant to last - and the front yard of the house I lived in at that time on Fessenden St in Washington, DC, evolved into something of a local roadside attraction. A video about this project is available on YouTube titled “My Personal Sculpture Garden” youtube.com/watch?v=3Sa5TURjp1w. Many of these sculptures were made from repurposed common materials such as hubcaps, plant trays, and PVC pipe. Creating these was great fun and since moving to Manchester, MD, in 2015 I have continued this tradition and have the beginnings of another sculpture garden in front of my new studio.
I have never settled on one particular art medium and am truly a multi-discipline artist working in many different mediums ranging from acrylics to welding to ceramic tile to dye-sublimation to mosaics. I sometimes sell my colorful prints, paintings, and constructions at art fairs in the MD/DC/VA area, and have installed commissioned sculptures in DC, MD, and PA. In 2016 I took a one year creative break to build a new studio/workshop outside of Manchester MD, and since completing my dream studio I am once again creating art and teaching art courses in this wonderful and inspiring new setting.
