Dorothy Piper was born in Hornchurch, England, in 1936, and wrote her first prize-winning essay - When I Grow Up - when she was eight. When she did grow up, she did not become a sister in a children's home, her childhood choice, but combined a secretarial career with being a working mother until she was sixty. During that half-century, Dorothy submitted poems and stories to markets as diverse as Dancing magazine and the BBC. She started her first full-length novel while working in London, and completed it in America after emigrating there in 1995.Since then, the novel has become a series. The Gift is Book I in The Martian Missions series. It is followed by Staying Alive and Pick Your Planet.
