Author Douglas Harris grew up in Burlington, NJ “back in the day;” i.e., the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. He interviewed over 50 people for Raised by Giants: Growing Up Colored/Negro/Black in Burlington, NJ Back in the Day. The interviewees not only shared their reminisces of the Giants that raised them, but described other phenomena unique to that time and place, all of which have been included in the book. which has been described as: …a wonderful book; an eye opener; a masterful job; great reading material; a blessing; great; an easy read; and a labor of love.
Mr. Harris taught in the Newark, NJ public schools for five years after graduating from Trenton State College. He then pursued a career in the corporate world where he was the highest ranking African American at McGraw-Hill Book Company; R.R. Bowker, a division of the Xerox Education Group; Scott-Foresman Co. Inc.; and the American Dental Association. He spent the last twenty years of his working career as a community relations consultant for Portfolio Associates in Philadelphia. Since retiring, he has served as Associate Pastor of Kingdom Worship Center Church, also in Philadelphia.
Doug has also written The Marvel Chronicles, a memoir of his 99 year-old mother’s life and The Life, Legend and Legacy of John Allan Harris, a brief biography of his paternal grandfather. He lives with his wife, Myrna, in a retirement community in Swedesboro, NJ. He holds a BA degree from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), and an MBA degree from Fordham University.
