Dr. Kolb's interest in psychology arose through his work as a professional performing artist. He was working as a circus performer when he developed muscular dystrophy, which ended his career as a juggler. So, he took to the stage and became a successful improv actor and comedian. When He began working with the Clown Doctors, the first group of clowns to perform in Children's Hospitals in Germany, his interest in child psychology was sparked. It is frequently said that humor is the best medicine; and, being inflicted with chronic and progressive muscle weakness, Kolb was in a unique position to gain a unique understanding of the effectiveness of humor as a coping method. Realizing that his future was destined for a wheelchair rather than a spotlight, Kolb obtained his M.S. in Psychological Counseling. Incorporating his skills as a performing artist, Kolb became a licensed mental health practitioner in Germany, specializing in child development and behavior. However, this also eventually became too physically demanding. Thus Kolb obtained his Ph.D. in general psychology and has been working as an independent researcher ever since.
