Walkers novels are set near salt water - the South Pacific Sea, the Oregon Coast and Puget Sound. Her characters are influenced by the sea. Seven of her 18 years teaching inside prisons involved a passenger ferry commute to a medium custody prison on an island in Puget Sound. The hundreds of male offenders with whom she worked looked out to the sea and dreamed of the boat ride to freedom and reentry to society.
