Jim Mackay was born in Dunfermline, Scotland shortly after the end of the Second World War. He studied Mathematical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Psychology at the University of Edinburgh before moving to England to begin his career.
After a few years working in the Meteorological Office, he embarked on what was to become a long and successful career in Information Technology. Having initially gained technical expertise in the design and development of information systems, he moved on to develop competency in the management of projects.
Over the course of a 40 year career he has managed many large IT projects in a variety of business sectors including Finance, Insurance, Energy, Human Resources, Distribution, Central Government and Local Government. He has been instrumental in developing a project management methodology, has developed and delivered training courses and presented on many aspects of project management. He is an independent consultant and an assessor for the IPMA’s (International Project Management Association) certification program.
His knowledge of project management disciplines and extensive hands-on experience of managing complex projects has provided him with the vital insights illustrated in this book. These insights are enhanced by descriptions of real life scenarios that he has encountered during the course of his career, and which highlight his pragmatic approach to projects and their management.
Jim met his wife Cica while they were both working in Libya. They subsequently moved back to the UK and made their home in London. They have been married for over 30 years and have two daughters – Vesna and Daniela – and two grandchildren.
