The bull never stopped. It could be the phrase that sums up Jodi Andes’ career. Ms. Andes grew up and graduated from college in northeastern Ohio (Kent State University) and started her career as many journalists do at a mid-size newspaper (The Mansfield News Journal). With a penchant for investigative reporting, it didn’t take long for editors at the Columbus Dispatch to notice. She left for the bigger newspaper and honed those same skills at the Dispatch for 13 years before being hired away again. Only this time, she was hired by new Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray. She served as the office’s senior investigator and was assigned to a fraud case, which became an obsession over time. It is the story of a con man so sleek he ran one of the nation’s largest scams against veterans while bankrolling politicians and committing the biggest breach in White House history. She turned the mystery into the narrative nonfiction, Master of Deceit, after eight years of investigation. Ms. Andes works by day in government communications in Columbus, Ohio, and is anxious to start her next book in the home she shares with her two sons.
