All four of author Katherine Kaye’s grandparents emigrated to the United States from Greece. She first learned about Bouboulina during a visit to the Greek island of Spetses and was convinced that the story of this brave and resourceful woman, who dared to defy both the Ottoman rulers of her country and the conventions of her village, could inspire girls far beyond the borders of Greece. Kaye also realized that the events of the Greek Revolution are relevant to our own time – and could repeat themselves. Between working as a doctor and tending to her own family, it took her a very long time to put the story to paper – but she has finally done so, and hopes that this adventure story from a distant time and place will entertain you as well as make you ponder some big ideas.
