Herder’s short stories have been published in St. Louis University Magazine (First Prize Short Story), The Pine Tree Review, tattoohighway, and AntiMuse (the story was later listed as a "Distinguished Story" in Best-American Mystery Stories). He has also developed numerous screenplays for numerous Los Angeles production companies. Two co-written scripts ("Frog" and "Frogs", starring Elliot Gould and Shelley Duvall) were produced by Wonderworks for PBS. His humor book Nuclear Chic was published by Pinnacle Books. His novel The Second Coming of Jesse James was a finalist in Wilkes-Barre University's James Jones Novel Contest. Kirkus Reviews called his novel Race Music an “engrossing and atmospheric tale” about “a racially charged killing that reveals the fissures of an intricately drawn St. Louis community.” It also proclaimed his young adult novel, Chaos Theory As Applied to Love, Baseball, and the Rest of the Universe, "funny, poignant novel that shows how baseball and love exist in a realm beyond reason.”
