Michael Mercurio is a retired insurance and real estate professional, and restaurateur. Born in New York City to a family of Italian Americans, he served in the US Marine Corps for four years and earned a degree in philosophy from the College of Charleston, where he was a member of the honors History and English program, and was deeply involved with a political group that made for social change in Charleston, South Carolina.
