Norma Sawyers-Kurz has written 4 books for grieving parents from the perspective of personal experience. In 1982 her 15-year-old daughter Karen was riding on a motorcycle with a friend when they were struck by a truck. Karen died as a result of injuries received in the accident, leaving Norma devastated, paralyzed by disbelief and shock.
After years of working through the grief process, she decided to reach out to other grieving families to share how she survived the most difficult period of her life. As a result, she has written four books to help bereaved parents and other family members move from the experience of shock and denial to the experience of affirming reality. She emphasizes patience, prayer, and the support of loving family and friends. Anyone reading her work will recognize that she has done considerable research, as she quotes many bereavement specialists who have written books on the subject of parental grief.
Norma's writing also reflects the outlook of those struggling to find answers to life questions. A March 1992 Booklist review of her first book, A Personal Grief & A Reasonable Faith, explains that "the accidental death of Sawyers' daughter at age 15 provides the springboard for her journey into faith. In confronting her own grief, she had to ask the fundamental questions that plague many people: Is it wrong to doubt and question? Why does God allow evil and suffering? . . . For those who are struggling with these very real issues, she provides a starting point from which they may continue to grow." ~ Mary Deeley
In addition to her books, other published work by Norma includes a contribution to an anthology and articles in journals and magazines. She is a graduate of American Christian College, Oklahoma City, where she received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies. She lives with her husband John and her dog Lady Diana in Southwest Missouri.
