Paul Kleiman studied literature at the University at Buffalo where several inspiring professors, including Diane Christian, Richard Fly and Leslie Fiedler helped develop his love for novels and poetry. He studied writing at the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, honing his craft with important writers such as Galway Kinnell and E.L. Doctorow. During this time, Paul also wrote songs and performed in many venues around New York City and Hoboken, solo and with his band the NY Frets.
Paul graduated with a J.D. from the Cardozo School of Law. Continuing to write while working as an attorney, Paul became interested in screenwriting. His first screenplay, “Other People,” was a finalist in the Motion Picture Academy’s Nicholls Screenwriting Competition. Paul moved to LA and pursued screenwriting in film and television, and became a member of the Writers Guild of America.
After several years, finding the world of Hollywood screenwriting somewhat lucrative but mostly unfulfilling, Paul turned his attention to novel writing. His first novel, “Smoking In Bed: dreams of love, sex and terrorism” is self-published and available on Amazon.com and in a few LA-area bookstores. He is currently at work on his next novel, “An Honorable Death,” based on chapters from Mark Twain’s “Life on the Mississippi.”
Paul has two children, one in college and one graduated. He and his partner Kiki live in the LA area and enjoy hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains and going to the beach in Malibu. He is the lead guitarist and vocalist for two Los Angeles bands.
