Book designer and artist Paul Nylander is as enigmatic as he is tenacious. Curious about everything, his journey has taken him from science and engineering to photography and design, all in his quest to help open communication channels and get people thinking. He has worked on covers and typesetting projects for a number of MIPA members, and thrives on the passion and dedication of independent authors and publishers. Prior to starting illustrada design, Paul founded and managed the U.S. division of a German measurement instrumentation manufacturer, focused heavily on marketing and customer training. His work in publishing and editorial design started much earlier, as editor and designer of the printed graduate newsletter while simultaneously completing his Ph.D. in physics. His photography has been featured in a number of exhibitions over the years, and his first foray into fine press publishing and the book arts, including hand-printed photogravure prints and letterpress text, is now in the special collections of the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minneapolis Central Library, as well as private collections in the U.S. and Europe. He is also a pilot and scuba diver, but most enjoys bicycling around town from his south Minneapolis home.
