A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Phyllis Pittman spent 25 years as a journalist, both freelance and staff, writing news, features, and travel pieces for the Hattiesburg American and the Jackson, Miss. Clarion Ledger. She also had a humor column in the American for several years, and worked on staff as the special sections editor. Additionally, Phyllis copyedits scholarly journal articles and literary works.
Pittman holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s in mass communication from the University of Southern Mississippi and has taken creative writing courses at USM. She has taught newswriting, copyediting and newspaper layout and design at USM and William Carey College in Hattiesburg.
Residing now in Fairhope, Ala., Pittman has turned her attentions to fiction writing. She has short stories featured in The Fairhope Anthology: Second in a Series, and recently published Night Mischief, the first in a series of children’s picture books called Pony Tales. Her first full length novel, The Trouble with Grits, is scheduled fro release in January 2014.
