About Captain Richard J. Marcott
Richard Marcott was born and raised in Bradford, PA. Following graduation from Bradford High school in 1953 he graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut in 1957. His Academy experience was highlighted by sailing the three-masted sailing ship, Eagle, on four training cruises to Europe and the Caribbean. He also sang in the Cadet Choir and Glee Club with live appearances in New York on the Perry Como Show, and in Carnegie Hall.
His Coast Guard Career of 28 years took him to both coasts in land and sea billets. He served on a number of Coast Guard Cutters, commanding a 95 foot patrol boat in Norfolk, VA, and a 205 foot search and rescue vessel in Morehead City, NC. He taught at the National Defense University in Washington DC, and was the Chief of Training and Education Division for the Coast Guard. He retired with the rank of Captain as the Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, CA.
After a short stint as a training manager at Bank of America in San Francisco, CA, he returned home to teach at University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and consult with regional business and industry on leadership and management training.
He served as on Bradford Area School Board for six years, and was a Director of Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems for 20 years. He's a past president, secretary, treasurer, and current member of the Kiwanis Club of Bradford. He sang in a barbershop quartet, The Northern Knights while a member of the Bradford choral group, Mountain Laurel Harmonizers. He has also served on the board of directors and was the treasurer, and president of the Bradford Little Theatre. He has acted in over 20 of their main stage productions, and directed four, his most recent: Waiting For MacArthur, and The Dixie Swim Club. He is married to his wife Carol, for fifty-nine years. They have one daughter, Kimberly Weinberg, and two grandchildren who also live in Bradford. He enjoys woodworking in his home shop. In November 2016, he published his first book, "The View from the Rigging: Memoirs of a Coast Guard Career," which received the silver medal award for memoirs from the Military Writers Society of America.
