Dr. Rick Scarnati was born in Super Bowl Country, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the eldest of ten children. He was the victim of severe child abuse. He served time in reform schools. A PhD Psychologist tested him at age 16, and informed him to learn a trade because he would not have the ability to complete high school because of a low IQ. Fortunately, Dr. Scarnati gave his life to Jesus Christ and was Reborn in the Holy Spirit which enabled him to achieve the impossible. The Scarnati home burned down when he was 16. He got a job as a dock worker loading trailer trucks, and attending Schenley Evening High School which he completed at age 19 ½. He served three years in the Army in the USA and Korea as an x-ray technician. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1963. He received a BS Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. He received a Diploma in Physical Therapy in 1966 from the D.T. Watson School of Physiatrics. He received a Master’s Degree in Health & Safety from Cal State Los Angeles in 1969. He maintained an “A” average in a Doctor of Education program at NIU. He did not complete the NIU program but chose to pursue medicine. Dr. Scarnati received the D.O. Degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1976. He completed a one year Certificate Residency in Psychiatry from the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in Chicago, IL 1977. He received a two year Certificate Residency in Psychiatry from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA, 1979.He received a Certificate of Training from the Corrections Training Academy, the State of Ohio, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, 1985. Dr. Scarnati has worked as a psychiatrist in several VA Medical Centers, worked for years as a Prison & Forensic Psychiatrist in the Ohio Prison System. He had worked at North Central Mental Health Services in Columbus, OH for 21 years.
Currently employed as a Forensic Psychiatrist for the State of Ohio, Dept. of Mental Health & Addictions, and is the one-and-only Columbus Ohio Jails Psychiatrist.
Dr. Scarnati has always held clinical appointments in medical schools and loves teaching medical students. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Forensic Psychiatry for Ohio University. Dr. Scarnati has a number of Psychiatric and Forensic Psychiatric articles. He is licensed in 8 states. He holds a number of professional memberships. He has received honors and awards.
