In 1966, with two-years of university work studying architecture, my draft status was changed from a student deferment to the top of the draft list. I enlisted in the US Army as a WORWAC, Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviation Cadet, and became a combat helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. I was discharged from the army in 1970 and began what would eventually become a 12-year odyssey of self-discovery and transformation from warrior to productive citizen. The first part of that 12-year adventure is recounted in JOURNEY TO MYRTOS, the first book of a two-book memoir. The second book, THE TRIALS OF THE INITIATE, is also published and available on Amazon.
In 1970, I completed my university studies with a degree in mathematics, and I subsequently completed graduate work in education and my doctoral work in the history of consciousness. I began my post-military career as a secondary school teacher in the early 1980s and taught junior high and high school math, English, history and art for 27 years.
In 2005, I published my first book on education: NURTURING THE SOULS OF OUR CHILDREN: Education and the Culture of Democracy. I have currently completed my second book on education, which is now looking for a publisher. Since retiring from classroom teaching, I have been writing and lecturing both on topics of re-inventing education in America and on the topic of "The Warrior Spirit and the Trauma of Mechanized Warfare."
