As a boy in Virginia, Sutton used to dig up civil war bullets–minie balls–from the property of a friend and this sparked an interest in American history that followed him through his years at the University of California, Berkeley and the College of William & Mary and has grown stronger over time.
His novel Robby Run kicks off a series about the ups and downs of antebellum America and its relationship to the rest of the world as seen through the eyes of a young naval officer.
The extraordinary career of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, the Old Bruin, provides the backdrop, starting with the fight at sea against an illegal trade in black Africans and ending with his stunning success in the opening of Japan.
After years on the west coast, Sutton is pleased to reside in North Carolina.
