Approximately a year and a half ago, after retiring from teaching and fed up with the negative depictions of African Americans on the "silver screen", I sat down and began writing a screenplay about the Gullah-Geechee people who fled their enslavers and established autonomous settlements in Florida. Encouraged to convert my screenplay into an historical novel, approximately 8 months ago, I wrote my novel entitled, The Unconquered: The Yamassee and Gullah-Geechee Wars. Although this is my first novel, I have written two small nonfiction books, several scholarly articles, and a chapter of a book.
