In the city park in downtown Delavan, Wisconsin, stands a monument of molded plastic depicting Romeo, famous rogue elephant of the Mabie Brothers U.S. Olympic Circus. The short story, "Romeo's Revenge," tells some of his poignant story. Circus lore from this small Southeastern Wisconsin town where 26 circuses wintered in the nineteenth century permeates many of the dozen stories in this anthology assembled by Delavan author, Byron Grush. \tWere there giants in the earth? One of Grush's fictional narratives examines this idea, touching on the plausible history of the Peterson brothers, at Lawn Lawn Hotel on Delavan Lake, who claimed to have found 18 skeletons that appeared to be ancient giants while excavating one of the 200 Indian mounds on or surrounding that property. Grush also tells the story of P. T. Barnum’s gold, stolen from him and hidden in the Comus lagoon. Of course there are the gangsters hanging out at the speakeasy called “The Sewer” in the basement of the Lake Como Hotel, a famous magician who runs away from home to have an adventure in the town of Delavan, Eleazer Williams, the king without a crown, a trapeze artist and balloon ascentionist who fights during the Civil War, ghosts and spiritualists, and a rain of fire that makes some Wisconsinites believe the end of the world is at hand. And more.
