A Beast No More: Emerging from the Middle State
On a day in June of 1950, three baby girls are born at the same time, in the same hospital. Baby Brigid goes home to a middle-class, lily-white west Cleveland suburb where her Hungarian firefighter father and Irish homemaker mother instill traditional Catholic values. Baby Babs grows up in Shaker Heights, an upper-class east Cleveland suburb where her Jewish father, a NASA astrophysicist, and her German Catholic mother, a NASA scientist, provide a stimulating life of intellectual inquiry, even as they grapple with a challenging affliction that strikes Babs early in life. Baby Rosie lives in Cleveland’s colorful west side, where her Italian parents own the neighborhood grocery store, and her father serves as city councilman. The girls meet up again fourteen years later and begin a life-long friendship that takes them on different paths, facing the obstacles of sexism, racism, and the ever-present turmoil of the Vietnam War. Their saga continuously forces them to choose between the aspirations of the human spirit, and the temptations of the flesh. Will they choose the spirit or the beast ... or languish in the middle state?

5.0 out of 5 starsA Must Read - I Couldn't Put It Down!

I laughed, I cried, and I relived so many moments and memories of growing up in the Cleveland area! I loved this heartfelt and passionate tale of three wonderfully developed characters experiencing the highs and lows of life for young girls coming of age in the turbulent 60's and 70's. Though they all faced different challenges and difficult decisions about their paths in life, their strong and loving friendship provided a firm foundation that kept them grounded and affirmed their convictions of the importance of family, friends, and traditions. As a mother and grandmother, I am passing this book on to my family members to give them some insight into my own experiences as a young girl growing up in the same era. I highly recommend A Beast No More and am eagerly anticipating the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Three great characters!

Three great characters ! This is a uniquely styled story where the author develops the main characters through their reactions to the historical events of the times. Narration, dialogue, letters, and even high school essays, slowly reveal the true nature of these young women. And just when you may want to feel sad, the author throws in a zinger to make you smile or even laugh out loud. I would recommend this book to anyone - especially those who want a fresh perspective on Catholicism, Cleveland, College Campuses, and the transformations of adolescents in to pioneers of science, activism, and world travelers.

Most enjoyable book I’ve read in years! Author Phyllis Magold’s masterfully written tale of three young women caught up in the seismic shifts of the 60’s and 70’s. I laughed, I cried and I remembered. This book is a valuable reminder that our differences can enrich our lives. Told with equal doses of warmth and authenticity-, A Beast No More- Emerging from the Middle State reminds us of the value of faith family and friends as we choose between the best and worst versions of selves. I look forward to more books from this author!

Totally enjoyed the book.Having grown up knowing the author, she captured the constant changes we all were exposed to duing the 50 and 60's. Enjoyed how she covered different areas of Cleveland and found myself remebering alot of what she covered. I would highly recommend this book not just for the nostalgia factors but because it is a well written expose of teanage angst set against the overwhelming changes we face during the 60's.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat story! Interesting characters!

This book takes a hard, but loving look at the lives of girls growing up in the 1950's and 1960's. I loved the minute details of young love and growing awareness of good and evil. Not a mystery-not a romance-just a fun group of real characters who face life head on. A great insight to the history of Cleveland is a bonus!!

5.0 out of 5 starsA Beast No More

ByAmazon Customeron January 10, 2017

Format: Paperback

A story of ante-Millennial coming of age. A tale of faith, family and female friendship against the background of the historic events of the 1960s and 1970s. Tenderly written, A Beast No More, brings to light the existential turns brought on by feminism, the drug culture, and the Vietnam war and the quest to rise above animality and mediocrity. At times violent and visceral, but also witty and droll—all the while affirming, without acrimony or approbation, the human capacity to endure.
