A Camp Without FIre
A Camp Without Fire Young Adult’s Perspective of Life during the Great Recession in California Marlene and Derek barely talked in high school. But now, seven years after graduating, they come into contact again thanks to the internet. He is an architecture student. She is stuck behind a desk. Both recently have broken up with their own first love and are desperate for meaning and perspective in life as they battle through their first challenges in adulthood. With the Great Recession in full swing both try to cope with their financial troubles, try to move on and away from their own exes but seem unable and unwilling to do so. They stumble by making mistakes and trying to navigate this new thing called their mid-twenties. The sarcastic personalities and brutal honesty of both protagonists shed light on millenials’ life during the Great Recession and provide a refreshing look into modern day California. And at the end, both are faced with life altering choices. Will they go down the same path that so many people have walked before or will they chose a new and distinct path? This book is a Roman à Clef. It is a novelization of my life in my mid-twenties. I hope to provide a fresh perspective on the traditional view of corporations and how we may avoid this problem in the future. It is an analysis and critique of the capitalistic system we have come to know and love. The up and downs of romantic relationships directly mirror those up and downs in our free market. But what can we do? How can we fix this system? How can we keep the romance alive both in our lives and in our economy?

Amazon Reader

I only gave this book four stars. The story kept me reading to know what would happen next. I did not like how this book ended and was hoping two of the characters that I like will end together. Did not like how the story ended because for me reading these books is a way of escaping reality and the end slaps you back to reality. Maybe other people like how it goes because that's life. The struggles of living in economic problems while trying to get an education to have a good future or people who are going through a break up, miscarriages, about real friendship. etc. It has a little bit of everything about real life issues.

Slice of Life Story - New Adult

This book travels through the college lives of two young high school acquaintances, Derek and Marlene, who are a bit unsure of themselves and their direction in life. There's not a hard plot here; it's definitely a slice of life kind of work. They go through relationships, school, and deal with work and family as best as they can. Derek comes across as immature but wanting to be a nice guy---however, he is very flawed in how he handles his relationships when something bad happens, often blaming the other person for being "dramatic." This seems to be his go-to in multiple relationships, and so we see a certain pattern here, and unwilling to mature. He's better at being a student, and a worker, but lacks in emotional maturity. Marlene is smart yet judgmental, but somewhat without direction, and the two find a friendship in each other while pursuing other relationships and dreams. They're both very real and identifiable characters and it is fun to see them grow into adults.

The dialogue of the story is good and engaging. I would have liked more into the minds and environments of these characters. I got the best sense of their location during a road trip. I would have also liked to see more gravity and emotion during catastrophic events (which I won't spoil for you here!) Looking forward to more by this author!
