A Twist of Fae
El Holly, author

Note: this is the second book in a trilogy.

A brief synopsis of book 1:

Eevee thought she was human, until she read her adoption papers and learned her birth parents were fae. Clues left by her birth mother sent her on a quest through the fae realm to find her birth parents. With some help along the way from her old friends Cam and Maggie, plus her new friend (and fellow fae) Quince, Eevee explored a new world, the world of her birth parents, and learned more about herself along the way. However, her quest also attracted the attention of some powerful fae, including Nightglade, her birth mother's former husband and the King of the Unseelie Court.

Book 2 description:

I know where my birth parents are.
And no, I haven't met them yet.
Because if I want to, I'm going to have to save them first.
****
With the help of her friends Quince, Cam, and Maggie, Evelyn “Eevee” Acker was finally ready to meet her birth parents, who, she’s recently discovered, are fae.

That should be the end of the story. But Eevee doesn’t find what she’s looking for.

Instead, she has a choice to make: save her birth parents, who she's never met, and put herself and her loved ones in danger? Or leave her birth parents to their fate, accepting she’ll never have the answers she’s been searching for her whole life?

There are some in Elfaeme who may force her to choose.

Assessment:

Plot/Idea: A Twist of Fae is a wonderful follow up to Finding Fae. The stakes are heightened throughout the story and the characters get to explore the Fae realm more deeply. There is a more adventurous plot and clear objectives in the sequel, which engages readers even more deeply than the first novel.

Prose: The prose is strong and direct, effectively communicating the complex plot to readers. On a rare occasion, action scenes may benefit from greater development. Nevertheless, there are lots of exciting moments throughout the story that pull readers into the text.

Originality: Holly has built a richly enchanting fairy world that grows throughout this second installment. The more there is to read in the Fae realm, the more there is to love. For young readers, this is whimsical fantasy series is a great introduction to the genre.

Character/Execution: The strong characters that were established in book one are expanded upon in the sequel, offering insightful new elements to their personalities as they face challenges. Holly does well at establishing a fully developed cast of unique characters that work together, but still remain true to themselves.

The Prairies Book Review

Deliciously captivating and wholly enthralling…

Evocative prose, atmospheric detail, and superbly rendered characters elevate this engrossing second volume in the Finding Fae Trilogy from Holly...

Eevee and Quince make for a worthy pair of protagonists, and a strong cast of supporting characters—including a fae cat, endearing pair of fae twins, and Eevee’s loyal human friends—rounds out this tale rooted in themes of familial bonds, friendship, identity, responsibility, and duty.

A deft blend of a coming-of-age tale and fairy-tale quest.
