Afflictions is the second book in Lennox McCaskill's Colossal series. The book starts where the first one left off after the chaos and destruction in Meridian. Afflictions follows our two main characters, Katie and Detective Wreings, as well as a few new characters (and a few more complex villains).
What makes this book so interesting is the level of politics introduced in the story and all the suspense. The town of Meridian is dealing with the aftermath of the last book and must determine which areas of the city to repair, which adds a realistic touch to this science fiction, superhero narrative.
Ultimately, this book was so enjoyable to read. I kept thinking about the story and characters even when I wasn't reading it. The suspense grabbed my attention and caused me to read the book faster than I normally would. The ending was very well-done, and I can't wait to see what happens in the third book.
When I pick up a superhero book, I want, first and foremost, to be entertained. It should be a fun ride. Afflictions delivers in spades. I finished this book in only a few days because I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the second installment of the series even more than the first.
I really enjoyed learning more about Katie, Reagan, and, my favorite character, Detective Wreings. We meet some new characters as well, and the way all the pieces of the story intertwine into the book's climax is cohesive and well done.
If you like action, adventure and superhero stories, I recommend this book
