Are You Eating My Lunch? by Dr. Nicole is a brilliant book for kids. Honestly, what attracted me most was the fact that it is an English and French reader. In this age of globalization, a child needs every competitive advantage they can acquire. To grow up bilingual or even multilingual is a great head start. America was a little slow to realize this, but in many countries around the world this has long been something taken for granted. Dr. Nicole chooses her target languages and then creates a wonderful tale that can be enjoyed by children who speak both languages. In this particular case it is English and French. Books like this are a great idea but it all falls flat if the story and illustrations fail to capture the interest and imagination of children. That is definitely not a problem here.
I really want to compliment the illustrator, Kathy Kerber. Children are just drawn (no pun intended) to the big, bold, colorful pictures. I know nothing about art or art theory. I only know that my kids loved the pictures and were very happy to hear the story that went with them. I know from experience that it’s hard to bore kids with animals, especially when they are rendered on the page in vivid, beautiful colors. Are You Eating My Lunch? is a charming story that every child can understand, enjoy, and learn from. I hope Dr. Nicole writes many more stories like this. She may even consider translating into other languages besides French and English.
