When seventeen-year-old Anna is sent on a tour of Europe by her grandmother in the summer of 1939, she thinks it will be a chance to see the world, to expand her horizons, and even, if she can escape the scrutiny of her exasperating chaperones, have some adventures. Soon, however, the threat of war turns to reality when Hitler invades Poland, and Anna and her companions find themselves stranded in England. Though at first Anna feels isolated and alone, she soon finds friends in the kind Bertrams. Growing to maturity through the devastation of the Blitz and increasingly personal grief and loss, Anna must face her worst fears, and finally come to terms with who she is...and who she wants to be.
