On May 24, 1990, a bomb exploded in a car driven by two Earth First! environmental activists. The woman, Vera Green, was seriously wounded. Both she and her partner were immediatly arrested for terrorism. Five days later, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat received a letter from The Lord’s Avenger, claiming responsibility and lamenting the bomb’s failure to take Vera’s life. FBI agents in charge of the case ignored the letter. In fact, Vera had received over thirty death threats that summer, but the only reaction she got from law inforcement was the comment, “If you turn up dead, then we’ll investigate.” Even that was a lie. Based on the true events of Redwood Summer, Black Mariah dramatizes the conspiracy by the FBI and the timber industry to shut down California environmentalists by infiltration and sabotage. But did they plant the bomb? And who is The Lord’s Avenger?
