Chase Robinson was a delight. Dave managed to create a narrator who is genuinely likeable, a plot that is just bizarre enough with just enough questions left at the end, and used Ottawa as a wonderful backdrop - LRT not withstanding (and in fact with in-jokes regarding that sore topic).
Dave's writing style is a cross between Tom Robbins, and Christopher Moore with a sprinkling of Dean Koontz in the Odd Thomas ouvre...In fact, Chase is as likeable as Odd, in that goofbally, endearing way. And I'm not gushing simply because Dave and I taught together for many years; I honestly had no idea he had it in him. I was pleasantly surprised. This was a great way to spend Victoria Day weekend.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys unravelling a thread; even if it doesn't completely unravel at the end...
Wow - this novel provides great insight into the inner workings of the mind of the male teenager - I loved Chase! A very fast-paced, fun read with lots of plot twists and turns. It's great also that the nation's staid capital - Ottawa - sees some action in this entertaining YA mystery. I look forward to reading more of Smith's work.
