Chloe Shipton & The Quill of LeFay
Lynn Veevers, author
When fifteen-year-old Chloe mysteriously disappears, the rumors at Grammaire Hall point to murder, but spiritual entrapment isn’t the same as dead. In a library that’s believed to be nothing more than a myth, Chloe's spirit is separated from her body after witnessing another student's murder. Try as she may she can't remember what happened to her before she woke up as a spirit in the campus graveyard. As Chloe uncovers clues leading to the mythical library's location and her body, a secret the Magical Parliament doesn't want to get out, starts to unravel. Rogue sorcerers have infiltrated the school, intent on reinstating the Third Edict, and sorcery students are dying because of it. Destroyed long ago for horrific crimes against humanity, the return of the Third Edict would spell disaster for both magical and magicless societies. To prevent her own demise and the fulfillment of the Third Edict’s return, Chloe must find a way to reunite body and soul without giving the rogue sorcerers the weapon they need to succeed, a weapon only Chloe can activate.

Recieved ARC from the author. Firstly I like the concept of the cover artwork, at first glance I thought it was a curtain, then I saw the figure. I quite enjoyed this one, Chloe the studious 15yr old is mature, selfless despite all she’s been through and I’d say naive.

The story starts off well, the thing that surprised me the most was the girl had to almost die before the boy noticed her. Apart from the obvious, the story is based on friendship and magic, there’s an abundance of both. Good descriptive writing painting the scene.

I think I would definitely choose cogitari, who wouldn’t want to read minds. I like the familiars and how they range on a scale of common to mythical. Why spiders? It’s always spiders (yep i’m terrified of them). The plot is good and even, the pace of the story is smooth. I found from chapter thirty one? Things started unwinding a little with the time skip and the trials felt like a filler. The transition could be a little smoother but it was all good.

My favourite character was Zanthus, because rules are meant to be broken and without him the journey would only be tougher. Could maybe do with a little info page with the orders and what their symbols look like.
