I'm always on the lookout for a solid superhero story, and Colossal did not disappoint. This is the first entry in what looks to be an thoroughly entertaining series with lots of room to expand. I personally found the characters entertaining and the environment expertly crafted, easy to imagine. I especially enjoyed the plot and pace of the story, which kept me engaged and eagerly jumping to the next chapter.
Can't wait to dive into the second installment - Afflictions!
I really enjoyed this book! The writing style makes for a good flow to the story line, which makes the book a pretty fast read. Starting at a slower pace the story quickens as the characters are developed and culminates in a scene that could easily transition to a movie screen. You do get a sense that this is the authors first book, which it is, but as the story line progresses McCaskill's command over the details and overall cadence leave you by the end wishing there was more. Luckily there is - in the form of book number two in the series, Afflictions!
With the superhero culture at its prime, you might think this is just another origin tale of mighty heroes on the rise, but it's quite the contrary. If you're a fan of real, in-depth characterization and strong story arcs fused with realism — this is the novel for you.
There's a character for everyone to relate to in "Colossal," but they're each one giant piece of an extraordinary puzzle that will keep you guessing and at the edge of your seat until the very end. Quick paced and packed with mystery, this novel blends action and heroism for a daring debut from McCaskill. Without giving too much away, the intricate details, realistic characters and thorough mileau help make this an impressive and incredibly entertaining read.
Moreover, it's very different from most superhero stories we have come to know and love today. This is a debut that stands on its own. I really enjoyed how all the characters came together, especially with how their arcs suit the trait of belonging and purpose each of them hopes to find in this well-thought out journey. It's a very fun read that I highly recommend for those looking to find the next big graphic novel or "hero."
