Consoling Angel

Mira did not know what she had in store the day she fell asleep while wanting to escape her current situation. Overcoming a death from someone so close and burying herself in school and an internship has kept her somewhat awake and alive. An admiration for the actor, James Dean was all that kept the memory of her father alive. If she couldn’t be with her father, she could at least remember what they shared an admiration for together. She always wanted to meet James Dean… she didn’t know it would come true. Be careful what you wish for. It may just come true.

First of all, I want to thank the author who contacted me and gave me the opportunity to read this cute and fresh short story in which we can "meet" James Dean in guest star.Like all short stories, I'm often sad that the story ends so soon, but it's a good thing considering it's difficult to bring the reader in the story so fast. Here, I have a little smile after I read the last sentence. I was curious how the author could bring James Dean in a short story and I'm pleased by the original plot which is cute thanks to Mira - the main character - and which is entertaining. Also, somehow this short story makes me think that the author puts some things of herself in it and it only creates more feelings that come through every descriptions and every words. So, it's a good discovery as much about the story itself as the writing style of the author. It's a quick reading that'll bring a smile and make you want to watch (again?) a movie starring with the unforgettable James Dean.

Consoling Angel by Denise Alicea is a short story about Mira and her admiration for James Dean. She and her father used to spend time together watching James Dean movies. Since her father passed away, she feels that James Dean is keeping her connected to him and keeping his memory alive somehow. She never in a million years thought she would ever meet her favorite actor, but maybe dreams do come true…

Short stories are usually hit or miss for me, but this one got to me on a whole other level…in a good way. Yes, I had my doubts about a teenager meeting an actor who has been deceased decades before her time, but it worked! It was so well written that my doubts immediately disappeared when James Dean came into the picture. I had a fan girl moment, as if I was meeting him right along with Mira. I had a ridiculously big smile on my face in addition to butterflies in my stomach. Only an amazing writer can have that effect on me, especially in such a short amount of time. So, kudos to Denise Alicea! My only complaint, which can’t really be considered a complaint, is that I wish it were longer. I want more Mira. I want more James Dean. But honestly, it is kind of perfect the way it is. I just hope to see more from this awesome author. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I am going to go read Consoling Angel a few more times because I cannot get this smile off my face.
