Cornfield Chronicles: Featuring Snowball, Pony From Hell
What’s going on here? A pony that refused to be broken? An owl and a pig that pull a Lazarus feat and came back to life after being pronounced dead? Shenanigans on a school bus? A dog who likes to wrestle? A tom cat exiled miles from his home but found his way back? A farm boy who’d rather be reading than riding a tractor? All these stories and more are featured in this collection of short stories by former farm boy Myron Williams. The author grew up in North Central Iowa where he somehow retained enough knowledge to become a farm editor for newspapers and magazines during his 39-year career in journalism. As Williams saunters down memory lane, he revisits the farm where he grew up. The land his great-grandfather, a Civil War veteran, moved his family in the pursuit of a better life. Some of the tales are humorous, some are sweet and a few are nostalgic. Williams pokes fun at himself while retelling some of his antics while growing up, such as disappearing mysteriously when a job needed to be done or being slightly confused during the first day of school or almost hitting the only tree in a pasture while driving a tractor at age 8 or witnessing mayhem in the show ring during the county fair. The author also remembers the animals that made an impression on him — positively and negatively — including two very loyal dogs, a family of barn cats each with a unique personality and the above-mentioned pony that waged war on him for several years.

 A TREASURE OF RURAL HISTORY

Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2018

Upon reading this anthology, be prepared to be picked up by the seat of your pants and to be dropped squarely back into the 1960’s. If you were a farm kid you will be mesmerized by these stories because you too also lived them or something similar. Williams uses humor and compassion to make history enjoyable and easily readable in a down home style. The overwhelming theme that comes through these stories is that something very special has been lost or taken from us in this day of corporate livestock confinements and agriculture mega business. And I don’t just mean the family dog. Charlie is almost a literary metaphor for the small family farmer with strong work ethics. The subsistence farmer who existed to raise a family and make a living has been nearly extinguished by the desire to make a profit and to do it without physical labor. The small farmer and his lifestyle have been thrown off the bus. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

He highlights the good, the bad

Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2018

I have just finished reading Myron Williams' delightful novel, Cornfield Chronicles: Featuring Snowball: Pony from Hell. His childhood farm life memories are extremely relatable and quite enjoyable! He highlights the good, the bad, and the bizarre. The writing flows from one memory to the next with notes if one needs further reference to other memories in the novel. This was a very delightful read. Thank you, Myron, for sharing your childhood.
