Dark Berries From A Southern Tree
Mantra Lotus, author
Dark Berries from a Southern Tree, the three women and me. A family of women collaborate and tell explicit accounts of triumph over sexual abuse, violence, and misogyny through cautionary fables and twisted tales. Corrine is the Grandmother. She is the Conjurer, good witch, righteous killer, and Voodoo Priestess. She is strong and wise but she wasn't always. She was the victim of the wrong kind of love. Her second husband tricked, abused, and cheated on her. He was also a child predator and molested her daughter (Katheline). Once she found out, she killed him as told in (Out My Mind, Porch Lady Talk, and a Revolver). Soon after, she became somewhat of a Mystical Crusader; a vindicator of broken women; (The Pill-Box Hat). Katheline, is the weak one outwardly, but very strong in her mind. She thinks the unimaginable but lacks the courage to execute. She is the “Whisperer” She tells the others what to do. She's the daughter of Corrine. She is very beautiful but ashamed of her looks because they always brought her trouble (The Fisherman). She hates herself. She self mutilates and is bulimic. Abused by many men and raped by her stepfather as a child. She was submissive and found being an adult difficult. Not able to cope, she kills herself not long after she gave birth to her only child, a daughter named Juniper. Juniper was trained and raised by Corrine who she called Mama Corrine. She carries traits of both her Grandmother and Mother. She’s very attractive as her mother but unlike Katheline, Juniper is very vain and proud of her body. She knows how much power it gives her. She is a true temptress. Ashamed of being weak to men she despises them, (She hates men) but she knows she needs them. She plays with them just to get what she wants. She is a trickster and Sin-Eater. Only attracted to the evil in people. Once found, she devours it (Beast of Belly, Introduction of the Jackal). Juniper has an addictive personality and self-medicates with drugs and alcohol. She is schizophrenic and clairvoyant. She bounces between the spiritual realm and the physical world. She lives with all the voices, her Mother, Grandmother, the Devil (HIM-HE); her mother’s abuser) and the Jackal (her self-made demon). Me (short for Meah), is the host of the women and narrator of this story. She is struggling to overcome a violent and very traumatic past. A victim of domestic abuse, child abuse, and sexual abuse. She wrestles with her demons and questions her identity as a woman, her humanness, sexuality, and sanity. The women give her courage but she doesn’t know if she can live or move on without them.
