Degrees of Love: A Novel
Lisa Slabach, author
Like the shiny new BMW parked in the driveway of the Silicon Valley home she shares with her husband, Matt, and their two boys, Susan Sinclair is the picture of personal and professional success. Yet with each advance in her career, Matt has grown more distant. When Susan meets her new boss, Reese Kirkpatrick, their working relationship slowly turns into something more. Now, unable to stomach the façade her marriage has become yet unwilling to decimate her family by moving forward with Reese, Susan faces a choice that could cost her everything—including her children . . . but possibly give her the happiness that has always been just out of grasp.

Assessment:

Plot: The plot of this novel is engaging and emotional. However, at times the storyline feels a bit contrived, and this works to take readers out of the otherwise compelling narrative.

Prose: Slabach’s prose is highly descriptive, vivid, and believable. The use of first person makes the narration simultaneously raw, humorous, and emotional.

Originality: At times this novel follows a familiar but enjoyable storyline. And while the ending is not a complete shock, there are pleasant surprises in the gender-role reversal in the Sinclair family and in the resolution of the story.

Character Development: Each of Slabach’s characters has unique strengths and flaws. Even the dynamics between secondary characters are authentic. At times, Susan’s indecisiveness slows down the story, but readers will find themselves indecisive about who to root for in this messy affair.

Reviews
A woman craves happiness and balance in Slabach’s piercing debut. Susan Sinclair, 36, lives a predictable, mundane life in a San Francisco suburb and is in a passionless marriage with her husband, Matt. Susan accepts a promotion to v-p in her financial services firm, despite Matt’s reservations—he’s uncomfortable with the job’s demands, which require more time away from him and their two boys. When Susan meets her new boss, charismatic, New York City–based Reese Kirkpatrick, there is both steamy chemistry and mutual respect, and they begin an affair. That summer, Susan leads a double life with equal parts satisfaction, joy, and guilt. She wants to excel at her career and indulge in the stimulating and comforting life Reese offers, but she adores her sons. Slabach’s depictions of longing, yearning, and love are palpable at times (“Before long, my tears kept pace with the rain. The pain in my chest was so crushing I could barely breathe. I couldn’t let go of the pain, so I embraced it.”), though there are a few false moments in which Susan implausibly manages to balance everything perfectly. Susan’s personal decisions and consequences feel familiar and real in this smart and sensual novel. (Self-published)

RT Book Reviews

Debut author Lisa Slabach writes an engaging and thought-provoking novel that explores the depths of family, love, marriage and second chances. Degrees of Love will take readers on an emotional journey as we watch Susan explore the different roles in her life, working to discover what it is she truly wants most.

On paper, Susan Sinclair seems to have everything. What more could she want? She has the large house, fancy car, husband and two kids. But as it turns out, looks can be deceiving. Behind closed doors Susan is unhappy. Her marriage is a farce; she and her husband have drifted apart, despite Matt’s insistence that everything is status quo. When she meets someone else, she must ask herself if she is willing to risk it all for a second chance at love and happiness … even if it means potentially losing her children.

Slabach has proven herself as a writer to watch. This is an extraordinarily well-written book that will leave readers turning the pages as fast as they can to see how it will all turn out. The ending is surprising and satisfying all at the same time. Very highly recommended.
