Lorraine Evanoff
Author, Translator, Editor (anthology)
Devil's Ledger: A Female Sleuth Financial Thriller with International Espionage (A Louise Moscow Novel Book 3)

Adult; Mystery/Thriller; (Market)

Coming off the award-winning success of her first two Louise Moscow novels FOLIAGE and PINOT NOIR, author Lorraine Evanoff re-imagines her feisty sleuth in DEVIL’S LEDGER. Ten years after her last major ‘banker’s grave’ case, and now officially recruited to the CIA’s financial crimes division, Louise Moscow is ready to shed her cover as a restaurateur and lavender farmer in Burgundy, France, and get back into the game. This time, she returns to uncover devastating corruption behind the world's oldest bank. Deep in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, where banking has Medieval roots, Louise follows clues leading to ancient monasteries, Russian Dark Arts, and a hunt for a mysterious treasure. All roads lead not to Rome, but to Sienna… Perfect for fans of Erik Larson, Dan Brown, Jack Slater, and Ian Fleming.

Prose: 8 out of 10
Character/Execution: 8 out of 10
Overall: 8.00 out of 10

Assessment:

Plot/Idea: The third Louise Moscow novel is a fast-paced, globe-spanning narrative focused on an international banking scandal. A highlight of the novel is the author's attention to historical detail, landscapes, and architecture.

Prose: The prose is evocative and smooth, with ample detail sprinkled throughout.

Originality: Devil's Ledger is an international mystery with numerous original elements and high personal stakes for the protagonist.

Character Development/Execution: Louise is finely developed as a character, although one never fully discovers the secrets of her heart. Side characters are written with attention and care, adding layers of intrigue and verisimilitude to the story. Perhaps some attention could be revisited to Big Steve's vocabulary and dialect.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Author Lorraine Evanoff delivers everything a sophisticated reader of mystery and spy fiction could possibly want in a novel. Think Bond, without the misogyny or needless bloodshed, or le Carré without the endless droning prose, and you’re halfway to the genius of Evanoff’s decisive, intelligent and well-balanced style of spy writing. The rest comes from a sense of urgency and relevance in all the right places, keeping readers on track with essential details and tense plot twists at just the right moment. Layered on top of this we have the cinematically described scenery of exotic vistas and dangerous situations, as well as the in-depth portrayal of the character that sees you really feeling for Louise. I had a lump in my throat every time she was in trouble, the danger felt so real. Overall, I would highly recommend Devil's Ledger for mystery and thriller fans seeking their next high-quality read.Devil's Ledger: An International Banking Spy Thriller is a work of fiction in the thriller, action, suspense, and mystery subgenres. It is intended for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Lorraine Evanoff. Part of the Louise Moscow series of novels, this particular tale is set ten years after one of her previously solved murder cases, and it sees Louise working for financial crimes and dying to get back out there into the espionage world. All clues point back to fraud and corruption, but what Louise doesn’t bank on finding along the way is an enigmatic and terrifying adversary who has mastered the Russian Dark Arts.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Devil's Ledger by Lorraine Evanoff is a suspenseful political thriller that will have your mind racing and heart pounding. We follow Louise Moscow who is a fierce and confident spy set on a mission to expose the corruption behind the world's oldest bank in Siena, Italy. She soon becomes the target of powerful enemies, the Master of the Russian Dark Arts. She will do whatever it takes to bring forth the truth of the political and financial corruption in Siena.

Evanoff has done it again! This book has it all, corruption, action, history, and a dash of romance. The author's writing is captivating and transports the reader onto the streets of Italy alongside Louise. I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions as it really brought the scenery to life and gave this story more of an exotic feel, well for me anyway as I've never been to Italy.

The character development in the story is one to be admired as Louise is such a strong and compelling female character that anyone can admire. Similar to the character in the movie Salt with Angelina Jolie, Louise is strong, sexy and intelligent; who wouldn't want to be her? Evanoff keeps the reader on their toes with unexpected plot twists that are wild but cinematic. But even with these sharp turns in the story the excellent writing ensured the plot was easy to follow. On par with Dan Brown novels, the historical aspects of the novel are intriguing and thoughtfully included in a way that intelligently elevates the novel.

The action scenes made this suspenseful action story hard to put down and I found myself finishing the book fairly quick. Devil's Ledger is intoxicating, action packed, and will leave the reader wanting more. I highly recommend this political thriller to readers who are looking for an intelligent and sophisticated international espionage story.
