When an anxious dog attends Pet Day at school, what could possibly go wrong?
A social-emotional learning story about learning from mistakes.
It’s Pet Day at Danny’s school and his dog, Dusty, is very nervous! He’s never been to school before and has a case of what Danny’s mom calls the “what-ifs”: What if they don’t like me? What if I make a mistake? Danny says to take deep breaths and think positively, but Dusty’s belly still flips with anxiety.
When Danny gives his pet presentation in front of the classroom with Dusty at his side, Dusty’s tail wags in excitement at all the good things Danny says about him…And that’s when chaos ensues! Dusty’s tail-wagging creates a domino effect of mayhem when things are crashed over, including the pet cages, releasing animals all over the classroom. Eventually, Danny and Dusty fix his “oops” by cleaning up and corralling the pets and all is well.
With playful read-aloud alliteration such as a hairy hamster named Harper, Parker, a playful parrot who only says “Pickles,” and a super scary snake named Slithers, young readers will enjoy the story’s silly antics and learning that mistakes are not the end of the world and are a chance to learn and grow.
